We combine manual harvesting, the absence of pesticides and mineral fertilisers, and careful trellis cultivation with 21st century winery techniques. Our wines treasure the unique personality of the wines of small winemakers who control every detail of their production. A philosophy that is committed to quality and to creating non-standardised wines.
During the waning moon phase, the vineyard becomes dormant. This is the time to clean it up and prune the unproductive parts. And it is also the time for racking, on clear days, without mist or squalls that could make the wine less stable. In the crescent moon phase, however, the vine expands its shoots. Production pruning now gives the shoots the energy they need to climb the trellises and bear fruit successfully.
The result is our wines made with biodynamic techniques, respectful of the environment, where the flavour and aroma come directly from the quality of the soil, the care of the grapes and the wise vinification.
The Alfonso family has been making wine for generations in Val do Umia, and there are writings from the beginning of the 20th century that speak of the harvests and the elaboration of wine from the careful work of the vineyard. The current winery was founded in 1997, the work has become more professional, but the philosophy of our ancestors is still the same. We continue to work with traditional methods and biodynamic techniques, which respect the lunar phases, and which allow us to produce wines without chemical corrections and without filtering.
The Pedralonga vineyards are influenced by an Atlantic climate, which provides mild temperatures and abundant rainfall for much of the year, and are suitable for grapes such as Albariño. The vineyards are rooted in sandy loam soils at the foot of the Xiabre mountain, on high ground facing north to south, in order to get the right amount of sunshine that makes them ripen better and keeps them healthy.
At Pedralonga we make wines with a temperament of their own. Albariños and personal red wines, which stand out for their balanced acidity, and are distinguished by the mineral taste provided by the granite soils of our terroir.
